THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) have made two new appointments to boost their “public face” in the build-up to the big race on June 14 and beyond.

Sifiso Mngoma (30) is the new marketing co-ordinator for the organisation based in Scottsville, while Kelsey Rae Lawrence (26) joins them as social media co-ordinator.

Together, they have to ensure that the iconic race stays well placed in the public sphere through various platforms, according to the CMA.

The marketing position has been vacant for roughly two years, but the other one is totally new.

Some athletes and administrators may recall that Tongaat-born Mngoma used to be the right-hand man of race chairman John Hall at the now-defunct Maritzburg City Marathon.

That aside, the mild-mannered sports enthusiast formerly operated as the marketing and social media co-ordinator at the Green Corridors ecological unit based in Durban.

Lawrence is from Pietermaritzburg and previously worked at a Global Peace Village in Korea promoting the work of Unesco, according to the CMA.

Delaine Cools remains the association’s media and communications officer.

Said CMA general manager Keletso Totlhanyo: “The Comrades Marathon Association is pleased to have these newest members join the Comrades Team. We have a strong and committed staff compliment who place great emphasis on honouring and living the Comrades values.

“We have every confidence that the Comrades brand will continue to gain prominence and be served by our very diligent and dedicated staff, with a fresh focus on serving our runners, stakeholders and keeping the ultimate human race top of mind.”

Meanwhile, the CMA received 27 500 entries for this year’s 90 km down run in quick time, but the final field will be determined once the usual office work has been done regarding qualifying times and substitutions, among other things.
