THIS week there are two sporting events - the Dusi and the City marathons - that are going to attract a lot of attention.

The annual Dusi Canoe Marathon started today, 18 February, 5.30am from Camps Drift. The three-day event finishes at Durban’s Blue Lagoon on Saturday.

Also today, the popular annual Maritzburg City Marathon will be officially launched at Imperial Hotel at 2pm.

The host club, Natal Carbineers Athletic Club member and organiser, John Hall, says new plans and more details about the event will be announced.

The marathon attracts South African, neighbouring country and international athletes .The race is used as a Comrades Marathon qualifier.

This year’s Maritzburg City Marathon is on February 28 starting from Natal Carbineers Athletic Club drill hall.

The race not only has achievable cut-off times - three and a half hours for 21,1km and six and a half hours for the marathon - it caters for runners and walkers.

Registered wheelchair athletes are welcome to enter the quarter marathon on Saturday morning, 27 February - for safety reasons, these athletes will no longer be included in the road running race). This is an entry level marathon, half-marathon or 10km.

Races include a 10km race beginning at 9am. This is open to runners and walkers and has a 2:30 time limit.

Organisers Andrew and Lauren Booth of KZN Trail Running have partnered with the Maritzburg City Marathon and designed a “figure 8” trail course along the banks of the Msunduzi River. The trail offers five-kilometre and 15km options.

“Traditionally, Comrades entrants use this race as their qualifier more than any other race,” said Hall.
