UKZN probes coffee shop fire

2016-09-07 06:00

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal is investigating the fire at a coffee shop on its Howard College campus, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The university’s security services and public order police were on high alert and monitoring the Durban campus, Lesiba Seshoka said.

The cafeteria coffee shop caught fire on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said there had been no protests and no case had been opened with authorities.

Some people posted photos of the fire on Facebook, and claimed it could be linked to protests earlier in the day.

Student Representative Council deputy president Sunshine Myende said the loss of the coffee shop was a blow.

“As the SRC, we are disappointed and distance ourselves from the burning or vandalism of anything. At the end of the day, we all need the same infrastructure. Life without the cafeteria coffee shop is difficult today.”

Myende did not believe students were responsible for the fire and appealed to anyone with information to approach the SRC, university management, or the police.

Myende said the SRC had recently raised problems about residences, the cafeteria, financial aid and security with university management.

“We are here to negotiate with management. We have been meeting and talking. This fire has nothing to do with us.” - News24.
