GRADUATING with an Honours in Medical Biochemistry summa cum laude was not the only good news for UKZN student Jivanaka Mohan as, upon graduating, Mohan was told that she had been selected to be part of a scientific research programme being held in Hamburg, Germany next month.

The 22-year-old from Northdale told the Maritzburg Fever that she was one of two honour students given the opportunity to go to Germany as part of the German academic exchange service, which will commence in June.

“I was overwhelmed when I had found out that I was one of the 26 participants from around the world to be chosen.

“I feel extremely honoured to have the chance to represent South Africa and hope that I can make my country proud in Germany,” said Mohan.

Mohan said that she first discovered her love for biochemistry during her undergraduate degree while she was also studying microbiology.

“I was always amazed by biochemistry and how the processes in our body take place.

“In my final year I was awarded as the best third year student in biochemistry by Merck SA and I realised I needed to use my passion to one day make a difference in the world,” said Mohan, who is currently studying towards her masters and hoping to next year study towards her PhD and thereafter become a researcher and lecturer.

When asked about how she managed to achieve such a feat, Mohan said that in terms of study methods she ensures that she plans her time well and has a good understanding of the content she is learning instead of by-hearting the notes.

“I thank my parents for the position I am in today because they have constantly reminded me to never be afraid of failure and to always try my best,” said Mohan.

Mohan said that she was extremely excited to go overseas and was relishing the challenge ahead.
