THE next time you have a blocked kitchen sink, you don’t necessarily have to resort to calling a plumber or pouring a bottle of hazardous chemicals down the drain.

Quickly work the plunger up and down for about 15 seconds. Pull the plunger off of the drain opening and see if the water starts to drain.

By using simple kitchen staples or a common household plunger, you can unblock your kitchen sink on your own without it costing you a cent.

It’s important to remember not to plunge or open your sink drain if you’ve poured drain cleaner down the sink. The chemicals can cause serious burns if they come in contact with your skin.

Use drain cleaners only if your sink is draining slowly and is not completely blocked.

Antonio Vannucci-Smit from IONIC Gas Plumbing Electrical shares tips on how to unblock a clogged kitchen drain:

Method 1: Use a kitchen plunger

• Partially fill the sink with hot water.

• Position the plunger over the drain. If you have a double sink, keep the plug in the other drain opening and press down on it to ensure that the plunger’s pressure is focused on the blocked drain.

To prevent future blockages, avoid putting food waste, solids, and kitchen oils down the drain.

• Quickly work the plunger up and down for about 15 seconds. Pull the plunger off of the drain opening and see if the water starts to drain.

• Continue using the plunger until the blockage is dislodged.

Method 2: Apply vinegar and baking soda

• Put on a pair of rubber gloves if the standing water is a bit gross. Use a bowl or a cup to remove standing water out of the sink. Pour the water into a bucket or down the drain outside your kitchen.

• When the blocked sink is empty, push one cup of baking soda down the sink drain. If necessary, use a spatula or a rubber spoon to force the baking soda into the drain opening.

• Pour one cup of vinegar into the drain opening. Put the stopper into the sink so that the vinegar is forced toward the blockage.

If all else fails, give a professional plumber a call and they will assist you to get the drain unblocked.

• Wait five minutes to allow the solution to work on the clog. Run warm water into the sink to see if the clog disappears.

• Pour four cups of boiling water down the drain if the warm water fails to work. If the sink is still blocked, apply the baking soda and vinegar solution again.

How to prevent future blockages

To prevent future blockages, avoid putting food waste, solids and kitchen oils down the drain.

Even when the kitchen sink is not blocked, you can use the baking soda and vinegar method to regularly maintain your sink so the drain flows as smoothly as possible.

If these methods fail, give a professional plumber a call and they will assist you to get the drain unblocked. – Property24
