‘Unforgettable’ fashion show in celebration

PIETERMARITZBURG’s City Hall was transformed into a fashion show extravaganza when fashion designer, Priscilla Bhika’s School of Fashion Design hosted its 50th anniversary celebration.

Bhika received a lifetime achievement award from Msunduzi Municipal Mayor, Chris Ndlela for her five decades of work in the city and her efforts in improving the lives of women and men, not only in Pietermaritzburg, but far and wide.

Bhika said she is grateful for the award, one which she would cherish forever.

“It is by far the best award I have received - to be acknowledged by my city as a contributor to women’s empowerment and education. There were tears in my eyes and my knees were shaking - it was a complete surprise.”

She explained that the show lived up to the expectation of its theme “unforgettable” and tickets were sold out two days before. Judges from abroad applauded the show and said it was of international standards. “The judges from abroad were over the moon. They recognised the talent of my students and some of them will be going abroad because of their skills,” said Bhika.

She said she did not set out to get the recognition from city leaders, but rather grew in her business and helped women because it was her passion. “I didn’t realise that the leaders had taken an interest in the school. We were surprised at what they knew about us and it was encouraging to know they have been following us.”

Bhika said the school will continue to grow and students will continue to aspire to the standards set at this year’s show.

“I got goose pimples at my own show for the first time, that’s how I knew it was spectacular. All my students did so well and I am proud of them,” she said.
