DANCEHALL deejay, Nafeesa “DJ Isis” Shaik, says she wants to promote dancehall in the Pietermaritzburg scene, and hopes to see the number of female DJs grow exponentially.

“I’m a female, Indian, Muslim DJ that plays ‘dancehall’ and probably the only female dancehall deejay in Pietermaritzburg.”

The Northdale native says she has been spinning dancehall music on the decks for two years and believes the music is about happiness and celebrating individual uniqueness.

“So what we wish to do here in
Pietermaritzburg as well is to bring
everyone to one place, regardless of their race or religious beliefs, we just want to enjoy living life and enjoy the music,” she said.

DJ Isis says her first attempt at achieving this will be the free-for-all- show in collaboration with other deejays, and hip-hop outfits will be hosting at the Polo Club on July 29.

This DJ-cum-dancer says the collaboration with hip-hop artists will hopefully create a merger for the two genres, dancehall and hip-hop, and by doing so, create a profitable platform for local artists.

“I was a hip-hop DJ before I started playing dancehall, now I just want to bring the two together and create something that people can move to, freely,” she says.

Shaik says her ultimate goal is to bring international dancehall artists to entertain the people of the City of Choice.

“But first we must grow the local audience and if we can achieve that then we can bring artists from throughout Africa,” she says.

Despite her hopes of growing the dancehall scene locally and bringing international artists to her city of birth, her ultimate goal is to be the best
at what she does and that is deejaying.

“I want to be the best deejay regardless of my gender, and I would love to see more female DJs being added to the mix.”
