THE Team of Choice, Maritzburg United, added to their 2018/2019 season woes as they were dumped out of the Telkom Knockout by defending champions Bidvest Wits 2-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.United were only able to carve out their first chance of the game in the 25th minute as some good link-up play between Fortune Makringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu resulted in a shot just wide of the upright net. Despite having lost two players within the space of two minutes in the form of Terrence Dzvukamanja and Thabang Monare, Wits were able to take the lead with five minutes to go before half time as Haashim Domingo scored with a deflected effort past United goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle. Wits then doubled their lead before the break, ensuring they took a two-goal lead before half-time as Buhle Mkhwanazi headed in from close range. United were left to wait until the 71st minute for their first goal when Justice Figuareido scored a sublime left-footed goal, pulling one back for United. Although United began to press higher up in pursuit of another goal, Wits showed impressive organisation and composure to ensure they saw out the game and won, thus earning themselves a spot in the semi-finals.
