United edge closer to relegation

2019-04-17 06:00

MARITZBURG United recorded their 14th defeat of the season after Highlands Park beat them 1-0 at the Makhulong Stadium, leaving United with little hope of overcoming relegation.

With four games remaining, United would have wanted to secure three-points to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive but Peter Shalulile had other plans as he secured the win for Highlands with 13 minutes to go.

With both sides beginning the weekend’s match in a rather reluctant fashion, United were the first to create a chance after Pagiso Sanoka’s header was cleared off the line.

Highlands then had a chance to go one clear just after the half-hour mark but Sello Motsepe was unable to convert, firing wide.

The side from the North had a few more opportunities thereafter, with Sanoka and Shalulile both missing to keep United’s hopes of a clean sheet alive but, on the 77th minute, those hopes were dashed.

Poor defending and communicating on the part of Maritzburg defenders allowed Shalulile to take advantage and score with Highlands seeing off the game to move into the top eight.

Now four points adrift of their nearest competitors, Free State Stars, United look as though they are destined for relegation.
