United languish in relegation zone

THE future looks bleak for Maritzburg United as they now lie five points away from the nearest team in the PSL at the bottom of the table, having played one more game than Free State Stars after losing 1-0 to Bidvest Wits on Friday.

Losing their 10th game of the season, United now have only 11 more games left to try and climb their way out of the relegation zone or face life without featuring in the PSL next season.

United started off well under their new coach, Eric Tinkler, but Yannick Zakri was unable to convert with his tame effort.

The Team of Choice’s keeper, Richard Ofori, displayed a highly inconsistent game rushing out of the box twice rashly but also making good saves, saving Deon Hotto’s freekick and his 33rd minute attempt.

Maritzburg were made to sweat on the brink of half-time, clearing Simon Murray’s shot of the line to ensure that they went into the break at a deadlock.

Wits looked a frustrated outfit throughout the second half, controlling much of the game but lacking any substance in the form of goals to cement their dominance on the game until Ofori left his line in what looked like a rush of blood to the head, allowing Majoro to take his time and tuck the ball away into the net neatly. It could have ended 2-0 if not for Ofori who managed to pull off a save in the 89th minute after a handball offence in the United box.
