United make the play-offs

MARITZBURG United may have had a disappointing season but hopes are high in the camp of turning things around and looking towards next season as they avoided an instant relegation from the PSL this weekend and will now have to play their way into the PSL by winning the play-offs.

Escaping automatic relegation on the final day of the season, the Team of Choice drew 1-1 with Baroka FC and won a point to edge out Free State Stars who were beaten by Mamelodi Sundowns, resulting in them being relegated to the National First Division (NFD).

United will now have to face KwaZulu-Natal side Royal Eagles and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC in the play-offs if they hope to remain in the PSL, a task which coach Erik Tinkler has deemed tough but achievable if United are at their best.

Tinkler said that playing NFD sides would be tough because those teams also want a shot at playing in the PSL and that sometimes players from the PSL become too complacent in their games against the NFD sides.

““You must maintain your professionalism and PSL standards and if you can do that, then you can beat the NFD teams. But if you go there and match their brand of football then you will come unstuck,” said Tinkler in an interview.
