ZIMBABWEAN attacker Gabriel Nyoni and former Bidvest Wits midfielders Phumlani Ntshangase and Daylon Claasen were all handed debuts in the first match of the season for Maritzburg United in the 2019/20 Absa Premiership (PSL), which saw United succumb to defeat in their first game of the season at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on the weekend.

Coach Erik Tinkler’s new-look side were forced to leave Durban without any points after Golden Arrows’ Michael Gumede scored a debut goal in the 46th minute to give his side a 1-0 lead, which they would carry until the end of the game, sealing three points for the home team.

In contrast to the result, Tinkler said that he was happy with the way his team played, stating that their attitude and drive in the match was a positive sign, especially since it was an away match.

Tinkler said that his side should have walked away with more from the game but that there were many positives which he would look at ahead of their next game.

“Everybody worked hard and they did not drop their heads after we conceded,” said Tinkler.

Maritzburg United will face Highlands Park on Friday, August 9.
