United still fighting

MARITZBURG United could be on their way to salvaging their season after having spent much of it at the bottom of the Absa Premiership, this after taking three vital points from a win against Black Leopards this past weekend.

In what came to many as a shock result, United were able to become only the fourth side this season to win at the Leopards’ Thohoyandou Stadium.

Goals from Mohau Mokate and an own-goal by Jean Munganga enabled United to move within one point of closest relegation-zone rivals Chippa United, and the side are now two points away from Leopards, who have 26 points.

Spending much of the season looking like prime candidates to be relegated, the arrival of coach Eric Tinkler has given the side a glimpse of hope. The team may have a fighting chance to stay in the PSL, should the last two games of the season work out in their favour.

“We played as soldiers because we knew what to expect from them. This win will build the confidence in the team ahead of the SuperSport game,” said Mokate on the club’s official Twitter account.

United have 23 points from 28 games. They will face Supersport United on May 4 before travelling to Ga-Mphahlele, near Polokwane, Limpopo, for their final game of the season.
