A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Clarendon will be representing Pietermaritzburg at the Mr India South Africa competition on December 3 at Hilton Hotel in Durban.

Nabeel Khan is one of the 10 finalists who are vying for the title.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Khan, a BCom student studying marketing at Varsity College in Pietermaritzburg, said he is not a professional model and didn’t believe he could compete in a national competition of this nature.

“A friend called me in May and suggested I enter the competition, but I never took it seriously,” he said.

“Aesthetically I felt I was out of shape, which was my biggest challenge. However, a few weeks later I said to myself I need to have faith and believe that if I enter I will work to ensure I am where I want to be, aesthetically and mentally.

“I went out on a limb and entered in July and it has been a crazy ride since then. I feel happy and proud I am in the top 10 because I have always believed that with the right support, which my family have truly given me, I can do anything.”

Khan said the reason he entered the competition is because it is much more than just modelling.

“This competition strives on individual diversity. As finalists we have to present not just the aesthetics of a model, but the intellect and leadership qualities of a young innovative entrepreneur as well. It requires us to be the ‘full package’.

“The opportunities are out there, we just have to work for them, and when our heads drop we must pick ourselves up and keep going. The competition is tough, but I hope to make everyone proud,” he added.

Besides being a student, Khan also runs his own fashion brand called Wahda Designs.
