Verges covered in glass

2018-08-29 06:02

THE realisation that plastic pollution is covering our oceans and rivers worldwide, suffocating marine life and destroying food sources, has finally dawned.

I wonder how long it will take before the light comes on about glass?

An early morning drive along Oribi Road after recent rains had washed the dust away, revealed just how much of the ground is covered in myriad pieces of sparkly broken glass, likely from bottles thrown out of moving vehicles.

The twinkling reflections could not go unnoticed. The pieces are probably impossible to remove, ever.

Surely this is inhibiting growth of the very vegetation that prevents soil erosion?

The sandy verges glittered and gleamed in the bright morning sunshine like the waves should be sparkling on the seas.

Reintroducing glass bottle deposits could have a positive ripple effect.
