THE highlights of 2017 include exceptional sporting achievements. Our first team and junior rugby 7s teams both finished as runners-up in their respective leagues and all our teams played with heart. Nikhil Gopal received national colours for golf.

Culturally, two choir evenings were undoubted highlights. Our drama department staged Happy Natives and the performers evoked strong emotions and caused much amusement for the audiences. In line with our mission to make God known to our pupils, our calendar includes Missions Week during which controversial topics are debated and we are always amazed at the maturity with which our pupils participate in these forums. This maturity is evident too in Outreach, where a number of our pupils have taken the initiative to reach out to those in need over and above the activities organised by the school.

Our top two academic achievers in 2017 were Rochelle van Wyk and Carl Brann, who achieved five and six distinctions respectively. We maintained our 100% matric pass rate record. We enter our 20th year with exciting levels of energy and motivation as we welcome a larger Grade 8 intake than in 2017. We look ahead to creating learning opportunities that will explore experiential education for our pupils both inside and outside of the classroom. A renewed interpretation of teaching the IEB syllabus will roll out to Grade 8s and grow with them as they progress through their high school career at Grace College.
