The Echo spoke to Pietermaritzburg SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese about crime and trends in the CBD that the public need to be cautious about.

He said cellphone theft in the CBD area is on the increase and advised the public to be alert when walking and talking on their cell.

Ngobese said people should avoid using their cellphones in busy areas because criminals take advantage of being in a crowd, which presents a perfect opportunity for them. “We ask the public to use their cellphones or gadgets in safe places,” Ngobese said.

“The carelessness of the public when using their cellphone is what puts them at the risk of being robbed either at knife point or with a gun, which is why we advise them to always be on the lookout and alert,” Ngobese said.
