Ward 34 honours its community

2019-11-13 06:01

THE long-awaited Ward 34 Annual Community Awards function took place last Friday at the Eastwood Civic Centre.

The event touched the hearts of many ordinary people who were previously overlooked despite their excellent work done in the community.

The first four awards took everybody by surprised.

They went to the Eastwood Library management, the Eastwood Civic Centre security, the Eastwood Civic management/caretakers and the councillors’ personal assistant.

An award was also given to the top Eastwood taxi driver and driver’s assistant/conductor of the year.

According to the organiser and founder of the event Jerry Barnes, it was encouraging to see people in these departments getting recognition.

“Those guys are looking after us and always make sure that our facilities are safe and looked after.

They also deserve to be encouraged in order to stay motivated,” said Barnes.

The former deputy minister of Environment Affairs Barbara Thomson said Ward 34, especially the Eastwood areas, can achieve a lot of things if the people stay focused, united and always work together.

“If we all can work as brothers and sisters we will go far and must plan our things together.

“We also need to understand that Ward 34 belongs to all of us and we must always help each other,” said Thomson.

Ward 34 former councillor and Msunduzi Municipality speaker Eunice Majola, who was a guest speaker at the function, said it is good to see good projects taking place and the Ward 34 Community Awards event encourages everybody to do well.

Other heavyweights who were honoured were the former Free Stars Stars and Maritzburg United midfielder who is now playing in the SA Futsal League, Enver Wiltwer; Gareth Simes of SA Futsal; the late founder and coach of Re-United Shane Patchay; Denwyn du Plooy and Braden Nott, just to name a few.
