Water leaks ‘bad publicity’ - DA

2016-03-23 06:00

DA councillor Judith Lawrence believes the city should step up its war on water leaks to avoid negative publicity. She made the comment during an executive committee meeting last Thursday.

However, referring to The Witness, Mayor Chris Ndlela said Lawrence was exaggerating as “there were only a few letters to the editor in the paper”.

The councillors were referring to two articles published in The Witness this week where the municipality said residents were to blame for imminent water shedding in the city.

Msunduzi Water and Sanitation manager Brenden Sivparsad said residents were “reluctant” to install the water restricters in their homes and that had added to the strain that was leading to the implementation of water cuts.

However, residents hit back in a subsequent article, saying the city was also to blame as leaking water pipes were left for long periods before being fixed.

Lawrence said the city was receiving “a lot of negative publicity” following those articles.

However, Ndlela disagreed.

“People say we should get our house in order before we blame them. What is our long-term plan?” asked Lawrence.

Acting municipal manager Boniwe Zulu said the city had presented its “war on water leaks” plan a few months ago.

“We are not running away from our responsibility, but the community also has a responsibility to save water.”
