WHILE the Msunduzi Municipality is facing water issues in different areas, a water pipe has been leaking for the past two years at the Pavallion area in Madiba and nothing has been done to fix it.

The community says this pipe used to have a tap attached to it however the tap was stolen and they were left with a pipe that they use to get water from.

The entire community of Pavallion, composed of about 100 residents, is using this pipe to get water.

Speaking to Echo, some residents said they are not only worried about the manner in which they get water, but they are also worried about the amount of water that goes to waste while other areas across the city are suffering from water shortages.

A resident who spoke to Echo said the leaking pipe used to be a tap that belonged to Madiba residents, but now they are also using it. She said they chose to close the pipe with a sack to minimise the wastage. “The sack does not stop the water from leaking but it is much better compared to the past years when the water was just flowing. Sometimes we even put a stone on top of the pipe, trying to save water,” said the resident. “Something needs to be done urgently because the water is leaking day and night. Imagine how many litres of water are going to waste each day.”

Another resident said they tried to report the matter to the ward councillor but they were told that they would be supplied with jojo tanks instead.

“We refused because with jojo tanks there is no guarantee that you will always have water. What if the water tank does not come to fill the jojo tanks with water? What is going to happen?

“We want them [the municipality] to fix this pipe and put at least three taps in the area. They cannot expect all of us to rely on this water.

“Other than that, it is very far from our houses that we have to walk. Some community members even prefer to ask for water from their neighbours with jojo tanks in Madiba because of the walking distance,” the resident said.

Acting Msunduzi Spokesperson Ntobeko Ngcobo said the water leak has been reported to the water unit and it will be attended to.

“The municipality has a water loss improvement project that includes a war on water leaks campaign that will kickstart at the beginning of the new financial year (2019/2020).

“We are appealing for patience from the members of the community and we ask that they continue to report water leaks in the area so that we can ensure that we address all of them as soon as possible,” she said.
