We must call leaders to account

2016-01-20 06:00

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is highly respected as a president who listens to the people, but his weakness is that he cannot hear. Bravo to him that he heard what people were telling him.

Anticipating a huge turnout for a march that would force him to hear, he redeployed David van Rooyen and reappointed Pravin Gordhan to the finance portfolio.

We must salute Vusi Pikoli, Reuel Khoza, Barbara Hogan, Panyaza Lesufi, Jay Naidoo, Zwelinzima Vavi, Shaka Sisulu and others who condemned the removal of Nhlanhla Nene.

Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe were not saints, but they protected and enhanced the reputation of the Office of the Presidency.

Who now respects this high office of our land when Msholozi is erratic and puts the interests of his family and cronies before those of the country?

Will Gordhan reclaim the integrity of the finance department? Time will tell.

As a nation let us continue reading the riot act to our leaders and simultaneously call for the president, premiers and mayors to be elected directly by the people, with a right to recall them at 60% in a referendum.
