MARITZBURG United players are capable of beating, upsetting or turning the tables against any team in the PSL.

Team of Choice head coach Ernest Middendorp believes his outfit should have beaten the high-riding Mamelodi Sundowns last Saturday night at Harry Gwala Stadium, but maybe basic mistakes, carelessness and lack of concentration during the game cost them dearly.

Unfortunately, the Team of Choice lost another game at home 3-2 against their Pretoria visitors.

Although during the game it looked as if the home team was outsmarted in many departments, they were able to squeeze two quick goals against Sundowns in the late stages.

The German tactician agrees that the late fallen hero, Mondli Cele was sadly missed and affected the fighting spirit and mood in the camp, but said that should not be an excuse when it comes to working in the field of play.

“We needed the time to talk, to pray and to mourn. But now it is time to show up, and that is what we have to do. We should not be making excuses.”

Team of Choice communications head Brian Zuma praised the players for standing up against one of the well balanced sides in the league, but agreed that maybe the recent loss of Cele affected them mentally.

Zuma said he hopes the team will be able to put everything behind them and carry on in the next fixture.

“We went through a very sad and mourning period, but I believe we are all professionals and are able to pick up the pieces and soldier on.”

In another tough assignment on Saturday the Team of Choice will travel to FNB Stadium to meet last season’s league champions, Kaizer Chiefs at 6pm.
