Wellness Day uplifts underprivileged wards

AIMING to address the physical, economical and social needs of the underprivileged in Ward 34 and Ward 38, the RivLife International Community Centre, based in Cinderella Park, Eastwood, held its fourth annual Wellness Day on Saturday, May 25.

“We focus on these particular communities especially because they are susceptible to illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and are plagued with high rates of poverty and unemployment,” said Serusha Pillay on behalf of RivLife.

The community centre catered for up to 500 registered clients, who were exposed to free expert advice from a range of specialists and organisations.

EVENT GUESTS HAD ACCESS TO:

• General practitioners

• A dietician

• A dentist

• An optometrist

• Women healthcare and family planning services

• Emergency ambulance services and district health clinics from the city (Eastwood Clinic, Capital Medical Centre)

• Northdale Hospital nurses offered services

• Blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and HIV screenings

• Jhpiego

• Legal advice

• Social services

• SAPS and youth crime prevention force

• AA and Al Non

• The AIDS organisation

• APD

“We also provided meals for our clients and offered free health education throughout the day.

“Local businesses were also on hand to reach out to the community and Standard Bank and Guardian Angel were present,” said Pillay.

Pillay said that the community centre was in awe of the help they received and wanted to mention Medport Pharmacy for sponsoring the medication and the River of Life Christian Ministries for their support.
