THE thought of having a house full of children all through the day can be a daunting one, especially so if you are a stay-at-home mother or father. Therefore the Maritzburg Fever has done a bit of research to ensure that parents can rest easy this school holiday, knowing they are prepared.

With the cost of living constantly escalating, we have come up with some beneficial solutions for both parents and children that will ensure happiness, regardless of spending potential.

School holidays are always a time when a lot of activities are going on around your area and most of the time these activities can be enjoyed by the entire family for free.

It is advisable that you check local websites for tourist information and sift through the local paper and community centres for any activities that may be hosted over the time period of the holiday. A visit to the local library can also be a source of great fun as libraries often host fun and informative events through the holidays.

The local swimming pool also offers a great, fun-filled day of splashing for the children, especially now that the heat, reaching temperatures well over 30 degrees.

For those of you who would prefer to stay indoors, there are various activities one can arrange so that no one is left feeling bored.

Cooking with the children always offers a fun and intimate bonding experience whereby you can enjoy shopping for ingredients and then get home and prepare an array of delicacies which you all can enjoy together, after some fun in the kitchen.

Movie days are a must for those odd occasions when you just want to relax in the comfort of your home. You can choose a few favourite movies, with the help of the children, stock up on the snacks and spend the rest of day lazing on the couch, engaged with your television screen with your family. Your own yard can also be a source of great entertainment for the children with various ball games on hand to keep your children on their toes, such as swing-ball and volley ball among other games.

The windy weather accompanying spring can also be great for kites, which are a cheap source of good fun.

According to familylives.org, it is also important to give your child their space sometimes as they gain their independence as they grow older. So, on certain days, allow them to stay in their rooms for a bit longer if they want to be by themselves.
