The Longest DayThe 21st Longest Day race will again be hosted by Collegians Harriers Club at the club. It is a 12-hour track race for both runners and walkers. A specially designed medal will be presented to all runners who complete a minimum of 80kms and walkers who complete a minimum of 60kms in the allocated 12 hours. The day is a wonderful opportunity for families to support their loved ones and enjoy a day outdoors. This year the race will be held on 6 August at 7am. Pink Lip-sync battle for CansaThe Pink lip-sync battle for Cansa will take place on 30 July at Victoria Country Club from 2pm to 4pm. Join Mrs South Africa, Maritsa Gouws, and Mrs India South Africa, Riona Rajkumar, as they complete a three-minute mimic and dance of a song of their choice. To be a part of the event contact Judy Umraw at 082 977 3708.Annual Aloe FestivalThe Ashburton Aloe Festival will be held in the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy over the weekend of the 2 and 3 July and coincides with the blooming of the wild Aloe Candelabra. This beautiful bushveld area near Ashburton, 10 kilometres east of Pietermaritzburg, was declared the first Protected Environment in KZN in 2011. It is home to a large number of wildlife and birds. This year, six venues will be open to the public between 9am and 4pm, including Galago Farm, Nick and Nicole’s TopRock Farm, Keith and Kathy Brown’s Impala Bend, Peter and Heather Poulsen’s Rocky Wonder Aloe Nursery, Louise and Allen Spencer’s ‘Spencers Place’ and Rick and Femma’s “Hackland Aloe Garden” in Bishopstowe. Contact Darlene Bond at 082 933 5036 for more information.Street Store 2016La Dame Royal with Pietermaritzburg Community and District Chest will be hosting the second Pietermaritzburg Street Store on 18 July, Mandela Day, from 9am to 3pm at the Metropolitan Methodist Church at the corner of Peter Kerchoff and Langalibalele Streets. Members of the public are encouraged to drop off their old, but wearable and in good condition, clothing that can be used in the street store. All clothing will be distributed to the homeless in Pietermaritzburg who can visit the store and ‘shop’ for clothing at no cost. Stickers cost R10 each and the money raised will be used for Reach For A Dream Sticker to help fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses between the ages of three and 18. Week of hope Scripture Union (SU) challenges teenagers and young adults to give their time to share hope in their annual Week of Hope initiative. It is an opportunity to keep older teenagers occupied by directing their energy and focus to helping younger children by sharing valuable life skills and biblical values through sharing hope over a week. SU partners with schools, colleges and universities to train young leaders from around KZN to initiate this project in the winter holidays.
