THE KZN Wheels and Runners Club from Pietermaritzburg came back with two gold and 11 bronze medals after competing in the prestigious Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge in the Western Cape on the weekend.

In the challenge athletes race in wheelchairs, hand cycles and basketball chairs in various race categories.

Two participants from the KZN Wheels and Runners Club, Lucky Bhukwana and Aphiwe Mdukwa, each bagged two gold medals in the 10km race.

Speaking to Maritzburg Echo, Bhukwana, the club’s coach, said he was ecstatic.

“This is an international competition and to get a gold medal means a great deal.

“We are happy we represented our municipality well and hope to continue the momentum in the Maritzburg marathon this coming weekend as well.”

The club’s chairperson Njabulo Mzobe urged Msunduzi Municipality and business people to sponsor them with hand cycles so they can compete again next year.

“We could have done exceptionally well if we competed in hand cycles and not our ordinary wheelchairs.

“We love competing and need sponsorship to get the right equipment so we can compete in the 21km and 42km races as well.”

Bawinile Shezi founder of Siyabathanda Foundation, which deals with physically challenged people asked parents to encourage disabled persons to take up sport.

“The club offers different sporting codes that cater to the needs of the physically challenged.

“We ask parents to encourage their children to join us.”
