Who holds the key to cleaner air for Pietermaritzburg residents?

WE are experiencing first-hand (yet again) how recurring fires at the City of Choice’s municipal dump are creating toxic air which is negatively affecting our collective respiratory health and environment.

But why do these fires keep occurring, and on such a grand scale?

Is refuse perhaps simply being flattened by a bulldozer rather than being mixed with soil and compacted with a compactor?

Are the fermentation processes’ by-products of methane and heat not being eliminated, thus vastly increasing the likelihood of spontaneous combustion?

Surely mixing the refuse with soil and compacting it as it used to be done would effectively reduce and dissipate the heat buildup, as this aeration would enable healthy organisms to thrive and assist in breaking down the organic waste safely?

Are there any functioning fire hydrants nearby, or alternatively, is water from the nearby Msunduzi River being pumped out to quell fires in the early stages?

So who would be the right person to oversee safe and correct processes?

Who holds the key to cleaner air for gasping ratepayers and non-ratepayers alike?

Is there anybody out there?
