WITH the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign nearly coming to an end on December 10, God’s Warehouse founder Debbie Schroeder has proclaimed that South Africa needs to make streets safer for women and children throughout the year.

“A protection order should not fall away and there should be a special place in every prison for not only sexual offenders and abusers but also for fathers that do not pay maintenance,” said Schroeder.

Schroeder said that more often than not she deals with women who have been abused and left with no confidence throughout the year and that gender violence should not only be emphasised for these 16 days, but should happen every day.

“This 16 days of Activism campaign needs to be used as a way to highlight the struggles women and their children go through every day of the year,” said Scroeder.

Many abused women stay with their abusive husbands as they cannot afford to run a home and care for their children on a single salary and terrified they will end up living on the street.”
