Woodhouse bridge to be closed this summer

2015-12-09 06:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality will be closing the Woodhouse Road bridge to motor vehicles and pedestrians this summer.

The municipality said the decision was made due to the many tragic incidents that have occurred on the bridge, where people and cars were washed away.

The bridge closed from December 4 and will remain so until further notice from the municipality.

“This is to ensure the safety of the communities within the area and to avoid the unfortunate fatal incidents that have previously occurred on Woodhouse bridge,” said municipa l acting spokesperson Nqobile Madonda.

However, owner of the Ascot Conference Centre Duncan Graham said the closure of the bridge would result in “bad business”.

“Business is tight and many use that route to get to us. The municipality spoke about building a proper bridge there but nothing has been done since,” said Graham.

He said his staff live in Sobantu and use that route to get home, however, when the bridge is closed, staff walk a longer route in the middle of the night and get robbed.

“If they [the municipality] are saying they are closing it during heavy rains then okay, but we are in a drought and I do not see how it is going to pose a threat,” said Graham. - Supplied
