SINCE the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the 21-day national lockdown, some employees have had to work from home to ensure that it is business as usual, and when the lockdown is lifted - there isn’t a backlog when they return to their offices.

As of Tuesday this week, there are currently 1749 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 and 13 people have died.

Echo spoke to a few people people in Pietermaritzburg who have had to adapt to their new working environment, whether it’s their lounge, kitchen, bedroom or even dining room.

The majority of them revealed to Echo that working from home is a nightmare and they can not wait to go back to their offices after lockdown.

Bongeka Sibisi who works in marketing and communications said working from home has been trying.

“It is very difficult to work in an environment that you normally relax in and all of the sudden you need to be focused and work.

And for me, what makes it more difficult is that I work for a retail company and most of my work depends on others as I need to communicate with them. With the lockdown it means there are no people available for this which forces me to focus on doing only paper work which will eventually be done in a week’s time. That means I will have nothing to do then. Lockdown is very inconveniencing for me and I can not wait to go back to the office as soon as this lockdown is over,” she said.

Slindile Dube said time management is one of the difficult things to maintain when you are working from home.

“When I am home I am expected to do other chores which makes it difficult for me to deal with my work from 8am to 4.30pm. With all your family members around you doing nothing it is very difficult.

“ At home I do not have that privacy and discipline that I have when I am at the office, which has led to me to missing some deadlines because I was busy doing other things that I am expected to do at home.

I wish that this lockdown meant no working from home as well I want to go back to the office.”

Bongiwe Nene said as much it is difficult to work from home, one of the important aspects that one needs to learn is self-discipline so that he/she can get the work done.

“ Besides the noise from outside and the family members around you, if you want to get your work done during this lockdown you must be disciplined and tell yourself that I am at work and I have work that needs to be done and submitted everyday.

I know it is difficult for all of us because we are used to working from the office, but it is doable,” she said.
