Xolani Gwala: a great loss to the country

2019-11-13 06:01

THE media industry and the entire South Africa has, indeed, lost an iconic young journalist in Xolani Gwala.

At a mere 44 years old, he departed the land of the living and left a void that’s yet to be filled.

Although I didn’t know him personally, the fearless way he conducted his interviews, even with the very powerful, left one with no doubt that the man was born for the craft of journalism.

He ensured that he unpacked and unearthed any doublespeak and spin coming from his interviewee, to the satisfaction of his listeners.

One journalist who had similar potential is Victor Molefe at Ukhozi FM. Unfortunately, he has been moved to the sports desk.

Of course there have been other veteran journalists who inspired one and who are now no more.

They include the likes of Percy Qoboza, Allister Sparks, Thetha Masombuka and many others.

Now, more than ever before, there’s absolutely no room for sycophantic journalism, either in the broadcasting or print media, with our country being in this dire situation.

May Xolani Gwala’s soul rest in eternal peace and contentment.
