A YOUNG model from Laycentre in Edendale, Zanele Zuma, says she wants to be the voice of change and help young girls realise their dreams.

The Grade 12 pupil at Haythorne High School was recently crowned as a first princess at the Miss United South Africa pageant that was held in Johannesburg over the weekend.

Speaking to Echo, she said she felt overwhelmed and amazed.

Zanele was one of the three models who were representing the KwaZulu-Natal province in the pageant.

“When I saw the competition on Instagram, the bravery in me told me to take an opportunity and enter because I wanted to make my city and province proud,” she said.

She said modelling is not a career for her, but a passion.

“It’s something I want, something I feel inside, its something that determines who I am and its helps me become involved in different charity work and meet different people from different backgrounds.

“My aim is to continue with my passion in caring for people with disabilities, so am going to use my title to uplift and emphasise the importance of equality to the young generation following us.

“We must not judge people because we are all human and where they come from does not define our future.

“I have been working with [former mayor] Themba Njilo on this passion and he helped me achieve being part of the lives of young girls who are disabled or sick,” she said.

Zanele started modelling in 2016 and so far she holds 39 tittles.
