MUSIC enthusiast, Tim Lewis, will be playing at Splashy Fen with Craig Rude this year, just one of his many accomplishments.

The 19-year-old Pietermaritzburg musician has diverse skills in different instruments having grown up around music. He started playing drum kits at the age of six, saxophone at 11 and piano at 16 and completed the grade 8 level music for saxophone and drum kits.

“I’m not a singer, but I knew I wanted to make music a career when I realised there is nothing else I’d rather be doing. I look forward to every concert whether it is drumming for a rock band, singing for the choir or playing for the orchestra,” said Lewis.

“My parents always encouraged me, my brother Wesley, plays clarinet mainly as well as other instruments and my sister Jess used to play clarinet and bass guitar so it was definitely inspired by family.”

Lewis is involved in various aspects of music-making from producing, songwriting, instrumentalist, radio presenter to club DJ.

He has a DJ duo - Saxo Daxx - where he plays the saxophone over DJ, Alec Isenberg. He has also recently released a song Circles with Durban producers Daynik and Kyran.

Lewis matriculated from Kearsney College in 2014 and, with the school choir, visited Switzerland and Latvia for The World Choir Games 2014. He is the principle saxophonist for the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band and has travelled to Germany, Mauritius, China, and will possibly travel Austria this year. His biggest Pietermaritzburg gig was playing the saxophone for TiMO ODV at Crowded House in October 2015.

Lewis has DJ gigs lined up until April at Durban clubs Origin, Kulture and Tiger Tiger and also has songs and collaborations in the works. He is currently a radio presenter at Durban Youth Radio
