FORMER Mamelodi Sundowns striker Sandile Ndlovu will host the Sandile Ndlovu Annual Grassroots Easter Tournament for the youngsters of Imbali Unit 1 during the 2020 Easter holidays. Taking place from March 27 to March 29, the tournament will feature U11, U13, U15, and U17 teams. Speaking to Echo, Ndlovu said he started hosting the tournament in 2016 after his return from Johannesburg. He said that, this year, they are expecting at least 40 teams, from all over South Africa, to compete in the tournament.“The aim of this tournament is to keep children busy by doing something they love during the school holidays. We don’t want to see them roaming around the streets doing nothing during the holidays. We want them to play occer continuously, not only when schools are opened,” he said. Ndlovu said the tournament focuses on children because he wants to groom them in the sport and also teach them about the importance of education.“We know that not all of them are going to have a career in soccer, that is why I always encourage them to put their education first. “Even for those that will make it, the future is unpredictable and, once you get a serious injury, your future in soccer is gone. That is why it is important to have something to fall back on if soccer does not work out for you,” he said. Ndlovu also revealed that there will be scouts from Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams like Maritzburg United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and AmaZulu present at the tournament who will on the lookout for young talent. He said this will help a lot as those who will be selected will get a chance to be part of PSL instead of paying for developments, and they will be able to attend school at the same time. Teams that wish to enter the tournament can contact Ndlovu at 081 363 5723 or 081 284 3573.
