Zille needs to go entirely

2017-06-14 06:03

THE DA’s suspension of Helen Zille from all party activities is a welcome development. However, this needs to be extended to her role as Western Cape Premier. We take on board the DA’s principled stance that it cannot interfere in the provincial legislature’s role and decisions, but as a party they should make that call to the province. They’ve been demanding the ANC should recall Jacob Zuma, so why don’t they take their own medicine?

Zille’s Twitter comments about colonialism and technology have offended black people, whatever her intentions. Max du Preez put it most eloquently in his letter to her when he said: “The fact that you felt you had to make this obvious point on Twitter suggests that you meant something else, something more.”

The DA’s public statement spelling out their grounds for suspension actually negates the need to even wait for the outcome of the disciplinary hearing. The verdict will just be a technical matter, but in the public mind Zille is no longer fit to lead. Her position as provincial premier is therefore untenable. If the Western Cape thinks she is too big to fail, they can wait to hear voters at the ballot box. They never get their noughts and crosses wrong there.
It is the only province that has given the vote to different political parties three times now, first to the extinct National Party, then the ANC, and now the DA. So they can choose to lose Zille or lose the province.
