All eyes on man vs machine

2015-07-29 12:29

THIS weekend sees the 2015 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race getting underway from 9am at the Port Elizabeth Station with teams of 6 participants taking on a Metrorail train over the 38km distance between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage.

In an exciting twist this year, the team composition was changed to include a mountain bike stage which makes it one of the more unique duathlon relay events in the country. Runners will set off from the PE Station following the railway line to change over at the round-about opposite Sydenham Station.

The second change-over point will be on Grahamstown Road just past New Brighton Station and the third will be on The Strand in Swartkops where the runners will hand over the baton to the cyclists who will have an off-road section through the picturesque Redhouse village and onto Perseverance Station where they hand the baton to the 4th runner who takes is onto Despatch Station to hand over to the last runner who takes it through to Uitenhage Station.

Spectators will be able to track the train and the lead team on the website ( with the first teams expected to cross the finish line just after 10.30am.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, is the only event in the city which incorporates the 3 towns which make up the Metro and involves companies, clubs, schools and social teams. Through this event the organisers are hoping to create awareness and support for local NPO Love Story which is responsible for feeding hundreds of homeless people on a daily basis and are making a huge difference in our city
