AS part of celebrating this year’s World Belly Dance Day on May 9, two local belly dance groups, Rakshada Belly Dancers and Zahra’s Oriental Dance Studio, are both hosting shows to raise funds for animal welfare organisations.

World Belly Dance Day is a day to enjoy and share the mysticism of this ancient art form while promoting the cause of a worthy charity.

) Raskhada will be raising funds for Izinja Animal Care, with their show taking place at the Londt Park Sports Club hall on May 9.

Izinja Animal Care’s primary focus is to improve the lives of disadvantaged animals in the poorer communities. Their main focus is sterilisation, regular dipping, deworming, assistance and advice on general health care and shelter and by working hand in hand with the community they believe the lives of the animals and their owners will be uplifted.

Raskhada has previously hosted charity events for CANSA and retirement homes.

) Zahra’s Oriental Dance Studio’s show is in support of Port Elizabeth Animal Rescue (P.E.A.R) and will take place at the GAP hall of the Greenacres Presbyterian Church on May 9. This is the second year in a row that Zahra’s has chosen to support P.E.A.R.

P.E.A.R opened four years ago by helping to ensure that the dogs at the municipal pound, as well as confiscated dogs or abandoned dogs picked up by dog control, were provided with veterinary care, food and blankets.

South African Bellydance superstar Thelma Rose (winner of the 2014 Drum Queen competition), as well as the Desert Divas from East London, will be in attendance.
