Cathedral celebrates 190th birthday

2015-06-03 06:01

THIS year’s annual fete of the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin will be a special occasion as the church celebrates its 190th birthday.

Founded in 1825, the cathedral is the oldest church in Port Elizabeth. It has served thousands in the community over the years and has seen the face of Port Elizabeth change from an early settler town to develop into the beautiful city it is today.

The cathedral boasts some of the most exquisite stained glass in South Africa.

The fete will take place at the Walmer Town Hall from 8am to 12pm on Saturday (June 6).

A wide variety of goods will be on offer, including freshly baked cakes and treats, crafts, gifts, plants, fresh farm produce, fresh citrus fruit from Addo, boerewors rolls and curry bunnies.

The always popular white elephant stall will offer many bargains along with the book stall. There will also be a tea garden.

Naturally the costs of maintaining a historical building like this are very high, so supporting the fete will help to maintain the church. The cathedral also welcomes both tourists and locals to explore the beautiful building or worship there.
