WINTER might be the time to snuggle up, but for four-legged friends it will be the perfect time for some fresh air.

The Pit Stop Project, an initiative started by Marizanne Ferreira, is a dream that has finally been realised and will see dogs being able to enjoy more of the outdoors.

The opening of the Pit Stop was celebrated with a family/market day on Saturday, August 8 at the Animal Welfare Society in Victoria Drive, Walmer.

The project gives dogs, mostly from Animal Welfare, the opportunity to leave their kennels and run free in a closed-off 18m x 24m field. According to Ferreira, this project is close to her heart and is something that she has wanted to do for a long time.

“We say that dogs are our best friends, but we seldom do something for them. Now, we can at least give them a sense of freedom and enjoyment.”

Ferreira looks to create a “home away from home” for the pups.

Among those benefitting are pitbull Belle and husky Scooby-Doo who are now able to “socialise” at the Pit Stop field – something they can’t do in their kennels.
