VANJAAR se Nelson Mandelabaai-treinwedloop, wat op 2 Augustus plaasvind, gaan heeltemal anders lyk as verlede jaar s’n.

Die rede daarvoor is dat die organiseerders besluit het dat een van die skofte in dié afloswedloop nie meer gehardloop gaan word nie, maar wel op ’n bergfiets getrap sal word.

Spanne vir dié wedloop tussen mens en trein tussen die Baai en Uitenhage oor 38 km sal nou uit van vyf drawwers en een bergfietsryer bestaan.

“Terugvoering van verlede jaar se wedren was dat maatskappye gesukkel het om sewe drawwers te kry om hul spanne mee vol te maak,” het Michael Zoetmulder, die wedren-direkteur, gesê.

“Fietsry het die nasie soos ’n storm getref en is dalk die sport wat die vinnigste groei in die land.”

Die verandering in formaat maak die byeenkoms die eerste tweekamp-aflosbyeenkoms van sy soort in die provinsie en word deur die Oostelike Provinsie-driekampvereniging goedgekeur.

Spanne van maatskappye, klubs, sosiale groepe en skole is welkom om in te skryf vir die byeenkoms, waaraan daar verlede jaar 220 spanne deelgeneem het.

Die roete is dieselfde as verlede jaar, behalwe dat skof 4 tot 5 tussen Swartkops en Perseverance-stasie nou deur die bergfietsryers getrap sal word.

Net 300 spanne word toegelaat om in te skryf.
