THE SA Bachelor and Bachelorette competition seeks candidates who possess brains, beauty, entrepreneurship and the spirit of Ubuntu.

Ivan Green from Port Elizabeth is one of the eight remaining finalists in this national competition and the only one from the Eastern Cape. He believes that he has both the skills and determination to compete against participants from the larger Metropolitan areas.

The annual competition, which supports five different charities, has placed its focus on children this year. These include the Jacaranda Children’s Home, Louis Botha Children’s Home, Cansa, Food Bank South Africa and Amadea Safe House.

Green considers our country’s future to lie in the hands of children, and that they will inherit the country aided with knowledge from their predecessors’ examples.

“I am a big believer in assisting the community, but how many people help to look after the children that aren’t theirs?” he said.

His background of community service is a result of his parents’ involvement in Rotary Grahamstown. The SA Bachelor and Bachelorette finalist became motivated to participate in competitions that placed emphasis on charity work and raising community awareness, after his grandfather passed away due to cancer.

Green, who was also a finalist in Die Burger/Boardwalk Mr PE competition last year, is currently training for the International Body Fitness Federation (IBFF) 2016 competition and enjoys a multiplicity of sporting and outdoor activities. His involvement in cricket and running, in particular, will aid his attempt to raise funds for his campaign in the competition.

Green has planned to host a full day of action cricket where teams pay a fee in order to play. Furthermore, he also hopes to participate in sponsored running races. “I would run a race every single time one came up, but it won’t help if I don’t have people behind me supporting the children.”

Despite the competition’s connotations of pageantry, Green states that beauty is not a prerequisite for taking home the title, and that judging is rather based on innovation in relation to gaining sponsors and donations. At the same time, his career in sales has taught him networking skills and how to sell himself.

Green believes that his fellow finalists are worthy competitors due to their shared goals in community work. “I’d like to show the rest of South Africa that no matter where you come from, we as South Africans can come together for certain causes and make a difference.”
