JUDGING by the flurry of entries - from high profile runners - the Jumbo SA Half Marathon Championships, to be held on the Saturday, July 25 in Port Elizabeth, is going to be a very competitive and hotly contested event.

The defending champion, Stephen Mokoka, from Gauteng North, has confirmed his bid to retain his title.

However, local champion, Lusapho April, also has his eye on the title, and is sounding confident, as do Sibusiso Nzima and Lucky Mohale, both from Gauteng.

In the ladies’ category EPA Ntombi Mfunzi and the famous twins, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula from Central Gauteng, confirmed their participation. This mix of athletes will guarantee a nail-biting finish given that this is the fastest course in South Africa.

Road closures for the event will be from 5am starting from Driftsands along Marine Drive through to the back gate of NMMU.

Athletes will gain access at the crossover at 8th Avenue, Summerstrand and Beach Road (Pick ’n Pay Centre).

Access to the parking area on the sea side of Beach Road will be closed at 6.20am and remain closed till after the race. If anyone needs to leave early, do not park on the sea side of Beach Road as nobody will be able to leave before the end of the race.

The 21.1km starts at 7am and has a cut-off time of 3.5 hours, which relates to 10.30am. There is a free t-shirt and a Jumbo Shopping Voucher for the first 1 500 entries in this race. The 5km event offers a Jumbo Shopping Voucher for the first 500 entries received.

Prize giving will be at 10.45am at the start/finish area. The lucky draw is attendance prizes only, and consists of R25 000 worth of Jumbo Clothing vouchers.

Closing date for entries is today (Wednesday, July 22). For on line entries go to www.whereinpe.co.za. Hard copy entries are available at all the major sports shops.
