Man risks his life to save robbery victim

A PORT Elizabeth man risked his life saving a woman who was being robbed in KwaDwesi, Port Elizabeth at about 5:35 am on Monday.

It is alleged that a 42 year-old woman withdrew cash at the Ziyabuya Complex ATM and put the money in her bag.

An unknown suspect, coming from behind, grabbed the bag in a split second and tried to run away, said Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu.

The suspect was blocked by another man who was standing in the queue for the ATM. A struggle ensued between the man and the suspect until another suspect came around and shot in the hand, the man, who was assisting the woman.

The injured person, whose name is being withheld by the police, produced a firearm, shot and fatally wounded the first suspect. Meanwhile, the second suspect managed to escape with the firearm.

“Both the woman and the man were rushed to a Port Elizabeth hospital for treatment, the woman for shock and the man for a gunshot wound,” said W/O Gwavu.

He said the dead man, who is estimated to be between 20 and 30 years of age, was still not identified at the time of going to press
