Mandla Mandela may now appeal both his conviction and the sentence handed down for the alleged assault of a school teacher in Mthatha in 2013.

His legal team was informed late yesterday (11/8/2015) that the petition they had lodged with the judge president of the Mthatha High Court had been successful.

Leave to appeal his conviction for an assault case was denied by the Mthatha Regional Court at the beginning of June, after which the petition was lodged.

Mandela, the chief of Mvezo and grandson of former president Nelson Mandela, was found guilty of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm in March this year, after he allegedly beat up Mthatha teacher, Mlamli Ngudle in 2013.

He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and was fined R10 000, of which R2 000 was suspended for a year.

His attorney, Billy Gundelfinger and advocate Deon Pool will now prepare the appeal and hope to have the matter heard before year end.
