Metro boss gives deadline for relocation of manganese tanks

2015-07-29 11:46

IT will take four more years to relocate manganese ore and tank farm facilities, the city manager told DA councillor Dean Biddulph.

Municipal Manager Mpilo Mbambisa said Transnet had committed to a new date to complete relocation by June 2019.

Mbambisa said Economic Development, Tourism and agriculture directorate and the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) are working proactively with Transnet.

According to Mbambisa, the metro’s environmental health was responsible for monitoring the relocation and Transnet has been complying with a monthly monitoring test which they submit to environmental health.

Biddulph said it would appear to the casual observer that Transnet frequently moves the time frames. “This is something that has been on the city radar for a number of years. I understand that Transnet has experienced complications and it’s been difficult because of intense commissioning and decommissioning of environmental studies needed. There is also an environmental study that needs to be done to allow for construction in the new facilities, but this is also something that has been kept on the dash board of the metro,” said Biddulph.

Mbambisa said in response to Biddulph’s questions that the new facilities must be built at the Port of Ngqura. He said the land would then be used for motor vehicle export and another piece of land had been allocated for a marina/commercial development in the port of Port Elizabeth
