Ocean Series kicks off this Sunday

2015-10-07 06:00

AFRICA’S largest family beach event, the aQuellé Ocean Racing SeriesTM, kicks off at Hobie Beach this Sunday with registration taking place at News Café on Friday evening between 5.30pm and 8pm.

The Series, now entering its 11th season, is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and attracts families from around the Eastern Cape on mostly alternate Sunday mornings for some great family fitness fun. Season XI will comprise 10 race days concluding on April 3, 2016.

The Series offers 6 separate events each race morning in which family members can take part. For those who prefer to stay on the beach, the Series has the 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and a 1km Beach Run/Walk for children under the age of 12 years old.

In catering for the swimmers, the Series will feature a 1km, 2km and 3km swim distance every race day. For safety reasons, all swimmers are required to swim with the aQuellé silicone swim cap and once finished may not re-enter the water onto the swim course.

All events run simultaneously, making for an awesome spectacle when viewed from the beach.

Events start from 9am and are followed by the kids’ lucky draw prize giving from around 10am and the adult prize giving thereafter. Many local companies support the Series through the donation of appealing lucky draw prizes and the feature lucky draw prize each race day is R1 000 cash.

All kids in the 1km beach run receive a finisher’s medal whilst the adults’ category age group winners receive medals in the various events. Gareth Burley of Kingfisher FM is the MC for the event with entries open from 7.30am at Hobie Beach.

Currently there is a pre-season registration special of just R150 which includes Series membership of R50, an ORS drawstring bag, t-shirt and a cap. Series membership is compulsory for the Series with race day entry fees of just R60 for the swims, R40 for the beach events and R30 for the kids’ 1km run applying on race days. Family and Premier Membership specials are also available.

Online registration is required on www.oceanracingseries.com. Registration packs will be available for the first 400 people to register on or before Friday and collect same from News Café on Friday evening where there will be live entertainment and some lucky draw prizes including a top Speedo wetsuit and a Lion Roars accommodation voucher
