KLEIN Liam Jansen probeer homself élke dag teen die meubels in hul huis oplig om sy eerste tree te gee, maar hy kan nie.

Dié 17 maande oue kleuter van Bridge­meade in die Baai is met amniotiese ringe om albei bene én met klompvoete gebore.

Talle behandelings, medikasie en klein operasies later het spesialiste besef: Net ’n wonderwerk in die teater sal dié kleuter moontlik help loop.

“Liam se voete is onderstebo en hy staan dus op sy enkels dié kere dat hy wel regop kom,” het sy ma, Celeste, verduidelik.

“Die swelling en pyn wat hy verduur, kan enige ma se hart breek. Toe ek met hom swanger was, het my vrugsak onwetend geskeur en Liam se voete het dwarsdeur gegaan. Die gat het nooit groter geword nie, maar Liam het wel gegroei en die amniotiese ringe om sy bene, enkels en voete het sy ontwikkeling belemmer.”

Celeste het eers by Liam se geboorte dié defek ontdek. Sy moes kort hierna haar werk los om heeltyds na hom om te sien.

Sonder ’n ekstra inkomste kon die gesin nie langer ’n mediese fonds bekostig nie en moes hulle tot dusver self al die geld opdok vir mediese hulp.

“Die dokters is besig om te beraam wat die koste van die drie operasies – een om sy voete reguit te maak en twee aan sy bene – presies sal kos. Ons het Saterdag die eerste van ons geldinsamelings gehad, maar het nog ’n lang pad wat voorlê as ons genoeg wil insamel vir konsultasiekoste, die operasies en selfs die spesiale skoene wat Liam daarna sal moet dra.”

Volgens kenners is die toestand aangebore en nie geneties of as gevolg van iets wat die ma “verkeerd” gedoen het tydens die swangerskap nie.

“Die skok was vir ons groot en die pad is moeilik, maar ek glo in wonderwerke en meer so in my seun.

“Liam sál eendag kan loop,” het ­Celeste gesê.
