PORT Elizabeth members of the South African Police (SAPS) are investigating a case of murder after a 24-year-old man was gunned down in Zwide township on Monday morning (8 June).

According to police spokesperson, Constable Mncedi Mbombo, three unknown assailants entered 2010 Tavern in Zwide Township about 05:00 on Monday and without saying anything, shot and wounded the 24-year-old and quickly fled the scene. Local residents who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene.

They saw the man on the floor in a pool of blood but still alive. They phoned an ambulance and the police. “An ambulance arrived first at the scene and while residents were helping the emergency services, officials loaded the injured man into the ambulance. One suspect arrived and fired more gunshots that fatally wounded the 24-year-old.

The name of the deceased could not be mentioned as members of his family had not been informed yet. Mbombo commended the residents for phoning the ambulance and the police, but urged the emergency services officials to contact police when attending such emergency calls especially when guns were mentioned.

“Areas like Zwide township are very dangerous. We want to urge members of the emergency services to contact police to escort them when attending to such cases,” said Mbombo, adding that nobody had been arrested for the incident yet.

“We are busy with investigations. Police were asking members of the community to assist them with information that could lead to the arrest and possible conviction of the suspects of this incident."
