STEPHAN Dryer (14) lê elke dag in die kroeg rond en dit moet einde kry, sal dié wat nie weet nie, sê.

Dié wat weet, sal hom aanmoedig om soveel as moontlik soontoe te gaan. Nie om te drink of te rook nie, maar om homself so vernuftig moontlik in potspel te hou.

Dryer ’n gr. 9-leerder van die Hoërskool Cilliè in die Baai is al só ’n uitstekende Blackball-potspelspeler dat hy in die Protea o.18 span opgeneem en die wêreld vol toer.

Hy is nou gekies om volgende jaar die Protea junior span in Frankryk te verteenwoordig.

Maar niks wat die moeite werd is, kom maklik nie, en hiervan kan Dryer, wat elke dag minstens twee ure lank in Sydenham se Big Waves kroeg oefen, getuig. Selfs oor naweke kry ’n mens hom daar aan die oefen.

“Die belangrikste is jy moet dit geniet en die res sal volg,” het Dryer vol vertroue gesê.

Verlede jaar het hy die Protea-juniorspan in Swaziland verteenwoordig en in September vanjaar moet hy die biljartstok weer teen die land se bestes tydens die nasionale kampioenskappe in Swartland, in Malmesbury in die Wes-Kaap optel.

Heimweë en verlange huis toe kry tog seker die oorhand wanneer jy rondry of rondvlieg agter toernooie aan?

“Ek is avontuurlustig,” antwoord hy, “daarom is dit nie vir my so erg as ek so ver van die huis gaan nie.”

Sy ma Amanda mis hom natuurlik baie by die huis want hy is die enigste kind.

“Maar ek gun dit vir my kind en ondersteun hom in alles wat hy doen. Ek het nooit sulke geleenthede as kind gehad nie en dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe my kind se harde werk beloon word.”
