THE boy with the angelic voice recently stunned judges and the audience when he walked away with the first prize at the Greenacres Shopping Centre’s Acres of Talent competition.

Levin Plaatjies (13), currently in Grade 8 at Paterson High, started singing at a very young age while he was at St Theresa’s Primary School. The young boy was and still is only interested in performing classical songs.

Teachers at the school noticed his remarkable talent and asked his family’s permission for him to be a part of the school choir - and he hasn’t turned back since.

He then auditioned for the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir and was accepted for the choir of 2013 and he is still a part of it today.

The energetic young boy’s biggest dream is to become a music teacher. He has recently been offered free piano lessons after performing at an event. He also wishes to resurrect the choir at his current school, Paterson High.

Levin’s grandmother, Sarah Malgas, could not be prouder of her grandson, whom she has raised since he was a newborn.

“His mother was very ill when he was born, so I took him home with me and from then I’ve basically raised him as my own,” said Sarah.

It is also granny Sarah who entered Levin into the Acres of Talent competition, in which he won Greenacres Shopping Centre gift cards valued at R10 000.

She has also been organizing fundraising efforts which include pudding afternoons and high teas to cover the expenses of Levin’s passion for singing.

“The Eastern Cape Children’s Choir will be going on a tour of Germany and the Czech Republic at the end of September. To be a part of the tour each chorister will have to raise R20 000, which is an enormous amount for us,” Sarah said.

“The vouchers he won in the Acres of Talent have helped to purchase his luggage and other things he will need, and for that we are so grateful.”

They however need to still raise the cash, and Sarah is doing her best with her fundraising efforts.

Levin will be hosting another fundraiser on July 12 at the Jarman Hall and is asking the community to support him. For more info or to assist the family, call Sarah Malgas on 072 204 8421
